LOPC Responds to LA fires
Multiple wildfires have caused widespread damage across Los Angeles, displacing nearly 180,000 people and decimating communities.
Since January 7, at least 10 wildfires have erupted in densely populated areas of Los Angeles County, with six still burning and most of the affected land uncontained. The fires have claimed at least 24 lives and forced 180,000 people to evacuate, with authorities expecting the death toll to rise. Active blazes include the Palisades Fire, which has burned over 20,000 acres, and the Kenneth Fire, which grew to 1,000 acres in just hours. In total, more than 35,000 acres have burned, destroying an estimated 10,000 buildings. Officials warn that severe fire conditions may last into the weekend.
In response, LOPC is partnering with Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA), which focuses on long-term recovery and coordinates with organizations like the Red Cross, FEMA, and others. PDA has been in contact with affected presbyteries, confirming the destruction of Pacific Palisades Presbyterian Church and several other churches at risk. More details will be available once the fires are contained and evacuation orders lifted. For more information about PDA, click here.

let us pray
We pray for all those impacted, for swift containment, and for the safety of first responders.
Holy Creator,
Today we ask for help for all of those impacted by these incredibly destructive fires. Sometimes when there are no words, or words seem limited, a simple brief prayer of help is all that is needed. So please show us how we can help. Please help the first responders and others who are working to serve others. Help those who have lost so much, and also those who lost the little they had. Help the communities affected that do not recognize the little that has survived, including all of the churches and houses of worship that have been destroyed.
Remind us all that when we are at our best, we are connected to each other because our call to help teaches us that we all belong to one another. Also, remind us that you are a God who is close enough help. You help us to continue to see and cling to even the smallest sign of hope in the chaos. Stay close to all who need help now so that your steadfast presence shows yet again that you are a God of restoration and a God that create new life out of the ashes.
