Welcome Center Volunteers

January 1 - May 31

Be an LOPC ambassador and welcome all on Sunday mornings in the Welcome Center. This is an easy way to start serving regularly and to get to know your LOPC community. The shift is on Sundays, 9:45 - 11:30 am. No experience needed! For additional information, email Michelle Browning.  

Alpha Series

Sundays, May 19 - August 4 (dates below) Following Worship, 11:15 am - 12:30 pm What is Alpha?: Alpha is a series of conversations about things we all question in life: Why do bad things happen to good people? What’s the purpose of life? What’s next? If you’re looking for a judgment-free space to ask hard questions and share your own opinion, there’s a place for you. Video Series: Week 1 - May 19 – “Who Is Jesus? Week 2 – June 2 – Father’s Day – “Why Did Jesus Die?” Week 3 – June 16 – “How Can I Have Faith?” Week 4 – July 7 – “Why and How Do I Pray?” Week 5 – July 21 – “Why and How Should I Read the Bible?” Week 6 – Aug. 4 – “How Does God Guide Us?” Course Experience: Following the worship service, the group watches the videos together and then has breakout conversations about faith. Children of the Camps Documentary Screening

May 19, 11:15 a.m.–1:15 p.m. in the Oak Room Please join the Racial Equity & Engagement team for a showing of Children of the Camps, a one-hour documentary that portrays the poignant stories of six Japanese Americans who were imprisoned as children in the U.S. concentration camps during WWII. The film follows their journeys toward healing in a workshop led by Dr. Satsuki Ina. Question prompts at each table will be discussed after the film. Dr. Satsuki Ina, who initiated the documentary, was interviewed by The Rev. Gerald Chinen, former LOPC pastor, in one of his “Talking Story” episodes. “This travesty of justice could easily happen to any other group….Educating people about the incarceration of one group will help prevent its happening to other minorities in our American democracy. -the Report of the Commission on Wartime Relocation and Internment of Civilians. Drop-ins the day of the program are welcome. A light lunch will be provided with a suggested donation of $5.00. Register Here

Sunday June 2, 11:15 am - 12:45 pm, following Worship in the Oak Room The New Member class provides an opportunity to meet the pastoral staff and explore church membership at LOPC. We discuss what it means to be Presbyterian, learn about the history and vision of LOPC, and how to have a meaningful membership. Childcare is available but must be requested before May 19. Vacation Bible Camp

June 10 - June 14

Monday June 10 – Friday June 14 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm
At Vacation Bible Camp, kids and volunteers seek kindness, mercy, and justice in the world through games, Bible stories, arts and crafts, and – most of all – fun! Camp is where kids learn how to play, have fellowship, and serve God and one another. And this year we’re making the biggest splash ever as we dive into friendship with God at our Scuba themed VBC.
